We were never really satisfied with our kitchen and bathroom cabinet looks: oak finish with shiny glaze over it. We like to say: oh this is so 80ies. So we did some research how to give our cabinets fresh and more modern look.
First Attempt - staining
Piece of advise:
1) Use the electrical machine for sanding it down to clean wood
2) Make sure all the corners and grooves are clean from the glaze
3) Practice and make sure you achieve the desired outcome before you work on your actual project
We spent hours of figuring it all out and trying different things, however the result wasn't what we expected. We tried sanding the cabinets with sandpaper - took us forever. So we purchased electrical sander that can be used as a buffer to clean our car later on. Well, it worked, but we really needed something that cleans the hard to get corners and grooves. At the end, perhaps the choice of the colour wasn't the right one and the cabinets still turned out to look so 80ies :)
Second Attempt - Rust-Oleum
Here we are, second attempt. We went to our local Rona and picked out the Rust-Oleum cabinet transformations kit. You have two options to choose from: either dark colour tones, or light ones. Guess what, best part about it is that there are two paint jars in the kit so you can still select two colours and have several smaller projects done with the same kit.
In the box you will find everything you need plus a short video that will give you great instructions on where to start and hot to finish it.
Our advice:
1) Purchase pack of Painter's Pyramids and use them to elevate your cabinet doors. Less chances of scratching the surface and helps to create very stable working environment
2) Make sure surroundings are free of dust and no animals are going near the project while you are working on it
3) Follow the instructions, it really is that easy
Review our pictures to see our working progress and result. We even used this paint to change the colour of our curtain rod. Hey, it worked and it still looks perfect!
If you have ever used Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformation kit, share with your tips and experiences.
